Elvira Perry Allen was a descendant of Edmund Rice through her father John Allen.
At the beginning of writing this post the only data I had was that Elvira P Allen was born 27 Jun 1811 in Barre, Worcester, Massachusetts, daughter of John Allen and Hannah Robinson and that Elvira was married to Henry Chickering and died about 1892 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The only source I had for this data was the book "Walter Allen of Newbury, Mass", page 20.
Ancestry had 7 Historical Record hints for Elvira.
The first and second Record hints were for her death record. She died 28 Apr 1893 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Next was the 1860 census record in Pittsfield, MA, which listed 3 children: John A, William H, and Sarah E. This record also tells us that Henry Chickering was born about 1820 in Massachusetts.
Next was the 1870 census record, again in Pittsfield, MA, which adds another child, Emma L.
Next was the 1860 census record.
Next was a City Directory record for 1887, for Pittsfield, MA.
I then searched for other records that weren't ranked high enough to become hints. I found a birth record which named her Elvira Perry Allen.
I was able to find a marriage record for 20 Sep 1844 in Massachusetts.
I was able to find a City Directory record for 1888, when she lived at 18 Elm, Pittsfield, MA.
I was also able to find an 1855 Massachusetts census, where she lived in Adams, Berkshire, MA.
She was also listed in Adams, Berkshire, MA in the 1850 US Census.
In the 1889 City Directory for Pittsfield, she is listed as Alvira P Chickering. at 18 Elm St.
